Jacobean Floral Rug from Target Stores

JACOBEAN - 'jak-oh-bee'-uhn'
-A period in English design from 1603 to 1688 during the reign of King James I. The word Jacobean is derived from the Latin form of King James' name, 'Jacobeus'.

The design style is characterized by a tendency toward the ornate Baroque stylings including elaborate carving, heavy oak furniture, fine tapestries, and crewel embroidery with ornate flower, leaf, fruit and bird designs. The motifs are characterized with a floral or leaf design filled with allover patterns created by many different colors in the manner that would be done by the finest English embroidery talents of the period.

Today, the reproduction of this design motif is found in textile products of upholstery, draperies, linens, and rugs in additional to dishware, wallcoverings, and other home decor objects. Many of the finer antiques can still be found with the Jacobean fabrics. The style has been kept in traditional ornate form, and can be found in many of the transitional contemporary renditions like the wallpaper displayed on this page.
