Paisley

Tablecloth from Home Decorators

PAISLEY - A pattern known in Asia as "BOTEH".  derived from the Hindu buta, or flower This common textile design is shaped like a teardrop - rounded at one end and curving to a point at the other.  The inside of the teardrop can be filled with many different intricate designs, traditionally inpsired from the Orient or India, but recently in many non-traditional styles. Implementations of the design are found in the simple repeating foulards (think necktie prints), in traditional masculine form, or in contemporary and transitional styles of various sizes and styling. Colors can range from vibrant to dull.

This design was first used in cashmere shawls imported from India in the 18th Century and soon became a 'must-have' necessity for the wealthy. A fine shawl, which might take an Indian weaver up to 5 years to complete, could cost as much as a London townhouse! The name, however, comes from Paisley, Scotland where imitation shawls were later made.

The Paisley design is now found in textiles, wallcoverings, rugs, draperies, and as a pattern on any type of decor including dishware. The paisley design is also commonly found in the world of fashion - clothing, handbags, scarfs.
